If you are applying for the first time you need not need to worry about the photograph, as your photograph will be taken at Visa Application Center.

If you have to renew your US Visa than have to make sure that your photo size is as per the specification below for your reference we have listed the points that you have to take care of.

  • Photo Dimensions: The required photo size for U.S visa is 2 x 2 inches (51 x 51 mm).
  • Image Quality: Submit a high-resolution photo that is not blurry, grainy, or pixelated.
  • Recent Photo: The photo must be taken within the last six months to reflect your current appearance.
  • Color Photo: The photograph must be in color, reflecting your natural skin tones.
  • Print Quality: Printed on matte or glossy photo quality paper.
  • No Digital Alterations: Avoid digitally changing the photo, as alterations can cause rejection.
  • Head Size: Your head must measure between 1 – 1 3/8 inches (25 – 35 mm) from the bottom of the chin to the top of the head about 70% face cover. 
  • Full Face View: The photo should present a full face, front view, with eyes open and centered within the frame.
  • Background: Use a plain white or off-white background without patterns or shadows.
  • Color Photo: The photograph must be in color, reflecting your natural skin tones.
  • Print Quality: Printed on matte or glossy photo quality paper.
  • No Digital Alterations: Avoid digitally changing the photo, as alterations can cause rejection.
  • Neutral Expression: Maintain a neutral facial expression or a natural smile with both eyes open.
  • Direct Camera Gaze: Face the camera directly with your full face in view.
  • Regular Clothing: Wear clothing that you would normally wear on a daily basis.
  • No Uniforms: Do not wear uniforms, clothing that looks like a uniform, or camouflage attire.
  • Glasses: Glasses are not allowed in visa photos. If you cannot remove them for medical reasons, include a signed note from your doctor.
  • Head Coverings: Hats and head coverings are generally not permitted unless worn for religious reasons, accompanied by a signed statement.
  • Jewelry and Piercings: You can wear jewelry and keep on facial piercings as long as they do not obscure your face.
  • Resolution: The photo must have a resolution of at least 600 pixels by 600 pixels and not exceed 1200 pixels by 1200 pixels.
  • File Format: Save the photo in JPEG format with a file size not exceeding 240 kilobytes.
  • Digital Upload: When applying online, you’ll need to upload the digital photograph as part of the DS-160 visa application form.
  • Professional Photos: It’s recommended to have your photo taken at a professional studio to ensure all requirements are met.
  • Avoid Selfies: Self-taken photographs often do not meet the necessary criteria due to incorrect size and head position.
  • Photo Tool: Utilize the official photo tool on the embassy website to check if your photo meets the requirements before submission.
