How to apply for US Tourist Visa for Indians?

  • The US Visa for Indians is a long and demanding process. You need to have a clear idea of the purpose of your visit to the US and whether you are eligible for the same or not. It is necessary to have certain details handy before starting with the process for the US Visa.

Procedure for US Tourist Visa application

 

  • DS160 is an online form that is filled in on the US Department of State Consular Electronic Application Center (CEAC) website. You need to select the category once you login to the website. Non – Immigrant B1/B2 is an appropriate category for tourist/visit purposes to the US. The form that must be filled out online will be DS-160.
  • Once you start filling in the form a unique reference number is generated which is to be noted for further reference. You can always save the form and continue later at your convenience. With the help of the reference number saved earlier, you can log in again for further completion of the form.
  • After completion of the DS-160 form submission of this form is done and further guided to the payment page. US Immigration fees of INR -13440/- is to be paid online on submission of the DS-160 form. You need to save this receipt number again for further reference while taking an appointment.
  • After successful completion of the payment 2 appointments are supposed to be booked. A biometrics appointment will take place at one of the VAC Center. Interview appointment will be the second one which will take place at the US Consulate or US Embassy.
  • For the Biometrics appointment, you need to carry your original passports (Current & Expired), A copy of an appointment letter, Copy of the DS-160 form, and 2 photographs as specified by the consulate.
  • On the Visa Interview day, you need to carry original passports (Current & Expired), the DS-160 form, Biometrics receipt and other related documents as per the application and advised by the travel agent. Questions for the interview will be based on your DS-160 form, and the purpose of travel and duration for the same.

 

 

Points to Remember

 

  • All the details filled in the DS-160 form must be true and correct.
  • Documents submitted for processing an application must be genuine. Fake, Altered, Misleading or Invalid Documents may lead to refusal of the visa.
  • Mistakes in the DS-160 form may cause a delay in the processing of the application, to avoid such delay take proper guidance and advice before submission of the application.
  • Rejection of the visa may cause a problem in the future for applying the US Visa as well as any other visa. Hence, it becomes necessary to provide the right details to the best of your knowledge.

Renewal of US Tourist Visa

 

  • Individuals having the renewal of the US visa are also exempt from biometrics and an interview. However in certain cases if asked by the consulate you need to attend both. Renewal of the visa can be done 6 months before the expiry of the visa or within 1 year of the expiry of the visa.
  • To check on the eligibility for the interview waiver it can be checked on the US Department of State Consular Electronic Application Center (CEAC) website. For renewal of the US visa for Indians you need to submit an original passport (Current & expired), 2 photographs as specified by the consulate, a copy of the DS-160 form, and a copy of the appointment letter. Renewal visa fees are INR – 11,520/-

While applying for the US Tourist Visa it becomes necessary to know whether you are eligible for the same or not. To find your eligibility you need to meet certain criteria. Conditions to be followed for proving your eligibility are as follows:

  • You must hold a valid passport with a minimum validity of 6 months when you enter the US.
  • You must prove that you are financially stable in your home country and can support your stay in the US.
  • You need to prove to the consular officer that your sole purpose for visit is for tourism or visiting friends or family. You will return to your home country on completion of your vacation.
  • You need to prove your social and economic ties, residence, and family in your home country to assure your return back.

While going for an interview with the consular office you need to carry a certain set of documents required for US tourist visa as per the checklist.

  • Original Passport (Current & Expired)
  • 2 Photographs as per specifications

  • Last 6 months updated bank statement attested by the bank

  • Retirement letter if retired

  • Tracking of the application can be done online by visiting the online portal at CEAC Website by using your DS-160 number and interview location.
  • You can also mail to passportstatus@ustraveldocs.com by mentioning your name and passport number in the mail.
  • Once it is ready for collection you can either visit your nearby VAC center and get collected as mentioned on the site while taking an appointment or you can get it couriered to your address by paying premium charges for the same while booking an appointment.
  • While visiting VAC for collection of Passport you need to carry any original government ID and a xerox of the same.
  • A representative or travel agent can also collect the Passport. For a representative or travel agent to collect the passport applicant needs to give an authority letter and one xerox of government id, whereas a representative or travel agent need to carry original and xerox copy of any government id with the authority letter in the original.

1. When can I apply for the US Tourist/Visitor Visa?
There is no specific time frame for applying for a US Tourist/Visitor Visa. You can plan a tentative travel plan and apply it accordingly
2. What are the mandatory documents required for the US Tourist/Visitor Visa?

3. Can I extend my US Visa?
Yes, you can extend your US Visa provided you belong to a certain category wherein extension is possible. You need to visit the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services with your application for extension. However, the extension on the visa is completely the decision of the consulate. You need to submit all the documents submitted during the previous application. In case of rejection of an extension, you need to exit the country before the visa expires.
4. Do I require to go through any medical test before visiting the US?
If you are visiting for tourism purposes or visiting family/friends then the medical test is not mandatory however if you are visiting your family and planning to stay more than 3 months it is advisable to do the medical test before an international trip.
5. What will be the bank balance required to visit the US?
• There is no specific amount of transactions that need to be shown. As per the consulate requirements, you must have sufficient balance in your account to cover all the expenses during your trip to the US which includes air ticket, accommodation, food, internal travel, and medical expenses if any. However, while submitting the bank statement you must show there is a steady balance in the account wherein there aren’t any sudden deposits or withdrawal of a huge amount which shows an irregular transaction done for the visa purpose. • Dropbox facility can be availed by all tourist applicants? • No, the Dropbox facility cannot be availed by all tourist applicants. This facility is available only for the renewal of US visa applications. As it doesn’t require biometrics or interview. However, the consulate may ask for an interview for renewal applications too.
6. How long can I stay with the Tourist/Visitor Visa in the US?
You can stay for a maximum of 180 days with a valid US Tourist/Visitor Visa.
7. In case of rejection of the US Visa will the consulate refund?
In case of rejection of the US Visa Consulate, charges are nonrefundable.
8. What is the estimated time taken for the entire process of the US Tourist/Visit Visa?
• Time taken for completion of the entire process is around 35-40 days which includes filling and submission of the form, collecting the documents, visit the VAC center for biometrics, interview with the consular, and collection of the passport. However, certain applications may take a longer time to complete the process, as the processing time varies according to the case. Hence it is advisable to consult a travel agent and get the documentation submitted as per the requirement of the case.
9. Can I apply for an express visa for the US?
No, there is no express service available for the US Visa. However, an express application can only be done on medical grounds. Therefore it is advisable to plan the travel for at least 60 days in advance.
.Do i need to submit my old passport for Processing China Visa?
No, It is mandatory to have an appointment for visiting the center for submission of biometrics or consular interview. They do not entertain any kind of applicant without an appointment.
11. Is Travel Insurance mandatory for processing of the US Visa?
No, Travel insurance is not a mandatory document for processing the US Visa. However, it is advisable to issue travel insurance if a senior citizen is traveling to the US.
12. Are Air Tickets & Hotel Bookings required for processing the US Visa?
No, Air Tickets and Hotel Bookings are not mandatory documents for processing the US Tourist Visa. Though Hotel Bookings are required if you will be accommodating in the Hotel. It is advisable to book Refundable Hotel bookings.
13. Are Internal Travel Tickets required for processing US Tourist Visa?
No, Internal Travel Tickets are not mandatory for applying for a US tourist visa. In case of booking is to be made, please make sure to book refundable tickets.
14. Can I reapply again if my US Visa is rejected?
Yes, you can reapply the US visa immediately once it is rejected. You need to arrange additional documents to make your case stronger and avoid further rejection. Though while reapplying again you need to go through the entire procedure again and also pay the consulate charges.
